Shackleford Banks is an island that runs west to east off the coast of North Carolina. We refer to our islands as banks. Diamond City once occupied a portion of Shackleford Banks. A community that focused on fishing, whaling, salvaging and surviving. The community existed until the Fall of 1899. The 1899 San Ciriaco Storm, the most powerful hurricane to ever make landfall to date on the Outer Banks, forced the inhabitants to leave these Banks and realize they were uninhabitable. Many went to nearby Harkers Island. Others went west up Bogue Sound to an area referred to as The Promise Land located between 10th and 20th Street along Bogue Sound in Morehead City.
We continue to develop these Outer Banks in defiance of our ancestors. These Outer Banks provide protection from the sea and continually move east. "...a foolish man who built his house on sand" (Matthew 7:24-26)
